Is transparency kept?
Yes. PNG supports transparency just as WebP does, so the transparent background stays as it is.
Is any quality lost?
No. PNG stores the image losslessly: the result is identical, pixel for pixel, to what the WebP shows.
Why is the PNG larger?
WebP compresses much better. It is normal for the PNG to be several times larger, especially if the image is a photograph.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion is done in your browser: this tool does not send the images to or store them on any server, and the new file does not keep the original’s metadata, such as the location.
When to convert a WebP to PNG
When the image is a logo, an icon, a sticker or an illustration with a transparent background and the program you want to use it in will not open WebP. PNG is the only one of the common formats that keeps transparency and opens everywhere.
It is also the best option if you are going to edit the image: being lossless, you can save it as often as you need without it degrading.
If what you need is a small file
For a photograph with no transparency, the resulting PNG will be very large. In that case convert to JPG, which gives a much lighter file at a quality you cannot tell apart with the naked eye.
