About Tools
Tools brings together 16 free online tools for specific jobs: merging some PDFs, converting an image, generating a password or sending a file. No accounts, nothing to install and, almost always, without what you type leaving your browser.
Who runs it
The site is built and maintained by Jose Miniño Diego, in Spain. There is no company behind it and no sales team: it is a personal project. To report an error in a figure, suggest a tool or anything else, write to wkielw@gmail.com.
How the figures are calculated
The calculators start from standard formulas, with the assumptions each one states:
- Mortgage: the constant-payment amortisation formula of a standard repayment mortgage, at a fixed rate. It works with any currency, since it only does the arithmetic.
- Percentages: the usual formulas for a percentage of an amount, one number as a percentage of another, and percentage change.
- Password strength: the entropy of a random password, that is, its length multiplied by the base-2 logarithm of the number of possible characters.
Every calculation has automated tests that run before any change is published, and the example tables on each page are generated by the calculator itself, so they cannot contradict it. Even so, the results are estimates: they do not replace an offer from a lender or advice from a professional. The Spanish version of the site also has calculators for Spanish taxes and salaries, which only make sense in Spain.
How what you type is handled
Most tools work only in your browser: what you type and the files you choose are not sent to any server. The ones that do use a server, such as the secret link or file sending, encrypt the content in your browser before sending it, with a key the server never receives. The details are on the privacy page.
How it is funded
With Google AdSense ads, which use cookies; how they work is on the privacy page. There is no paid version and no data is sold. The password and secret tools and file sending carry no ads and no third-party code. What you may and may not do with the site is in the terms of use.
