    Frequently asked questions

    How much does WebP save?

At equivalent quality, a WebP is usually 25% to 35% smaller than a JPG. Here it is saved at a high quality of 92%; if you want to choose the quality and shrink it further, use the image compressor.

    Do all browsers display WebP?

Yes, all current ones: Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, on computers and phones. Only very old browsers do not support it.

Can I use WebP outside a website?

It depends on the program. Recent browsers and systems open it, but some editors and forms still do not. For sending a photo to someone, JPG remains the safest choice.

Does it work in Safari and on the iPhone?

Not for creating WebP. Safari displays WebP images but cannot save them, and on the iPhone and iPad the same goes for every browser. The page warns you when you open it: use Chrome, Firefox or Edge on a computer.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion is done in your browser: this tool does not send the images to or store them on any server, and the new file does not keep the original’s metadata, such as the location.

Why use WebP on a web page

Images tend to be the heaviest part of a page. Serving them as WebP cuts that weight without the visitor noticing any difference, and the page loads sooner, especially on a phone and with a poor signal.

Loading speed is also one of the factors Google takes into account when ranking results, and its analysis tools explicitly recommend modern formats such as WebP.

    Before converting, adjust the size

The format helps, but the dimensions matter more. A photo 4,000 pixels wide shown in an 800-pixel column wastes most of its data. First reduce the image to the size it will be displayed at, and convert it afterwards.
